What to Know About Microneedling

From what it can improve to how it works and what treatment feels like, here’s what to expect from SkinPen microneedling.

01

What Can Microneedling Improve?

Microneedling may be a good option when your primary goal is improving skin texture and supporting healthier-looking skin.

It may help improve the appearance of:

  • Acne scars

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Enlarged-looking pores

  • Fine lines

  • Mild textural irregularities

  • Neck wrinkles

  • Overall skin smoothness and quality

02

How Does Microneedling Work?

SkinPen uses tiny sterile needles to create controlled microscopic injuries in the skin.

Those microchannels initiate the skin’s natural wound-healing and remodeling process.

As the skin repairs itself, collagen and other components of the skin’s supportive structure are remodeled over time.

Unlike laser resurfacing, microneedling does not rely on heat to create that response.

That makes it a valuable option for clients who want collagen-focused skin renewal with relatively little downtime.

03

What Does a Microneedling Treatment Feel Like?

A topical numbing medication is typically applied before treatment to make the procedure more comfortable.

During treatment, the SkinPen is passed systematically across the treatment area at a depth selected for your skin and the concern being addressed.

Most treatments are relatively quick, although appointment time depends on the areas being treated.

Your skin will usually look pink or red afterward and may feel warm, tight, or sensitive.

04

When Will I See Results?

Microneedling is not an instant-result treatment.

The improvement comes from the healing and remodeling process that follows treatment, so changes develop gradually.

As your skin recovers, you may begin to notice improvements in smoothness and texture. Additional improvement can continue over the following weeks as remodeling occurs beneath the surface.

For concerns such as acne scarring or more noticeable texture changes, a series of treatments is often recommended.

Your treatment plan will depend on your skin, the concern being treated, and the degree of correction you want.

05

Is Microneedling Right for You?

Microneedling may be worth considering if you're thinking:

“My skin feels rough or uneven.”

“I want to improve acne scars.”

“My pores look more noticeable than they used to.”

“I want to support collagen, but I’m not ready for laser resurfacing.”

“I want skin improvement without a lot of downtime.”

Not everyone is an appropriate candidate.

Your skin condition, medical history, medications, healing history, and treatment goals are reviewed before treatment.

Microneedling or RF Microneedling?

Both treatments use microneedles — but they are not the same treatment.

SkinPen Microneedling

SkinPen creates controlled microchannels to stimulate the skin’s natural remodeling response without adding radiofrequency energy.

It may be ideal when the primary concerns are:

  • Acne scarring

  • Mild texture changes

  • Pore appearance

  • Fine lines

  • General collagen support

  • Clients who want a less intensive treatment

Secret RF combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the skin.

The added energy allows us to address deeper tissue and may be a better option when the goals include:

  • More significant texture changes

  • Skin laxity

  • Deeper acne scarring

  • More advanced collagen remodeling

More aggressive isn't automatically better.

The right treatment depends on what we're trying to improve, your skin, your downtime preferences, and the degree of correction you want.

Secret RF Microneedling

Microneedling or Laser Resurfacing?

This is another place where treatment goals matter.

Microneedling

A good option for collagen remodeling, acne scarring, pores, and texture with relatively little downtime.

Laser Resurfacing

Treatments such as Pearl or Pearl Fractional may be considered when we need more significant correction of photodamage, wrinkles, or deeper texture changes.

Sometimes microneedling is enough.

Sometimes resurfacing makes more sense.

The goal isn't to choose the most intensive treatment. It's to choose the treatment most likely to address the concern you're actually seeing.

Better Skin Comes From a Plan

At AdoreU, microneedling isn't automatically recommended just because someone wants “more collagen.”

We look at:

  • What you want to improve

  • The depth and type of texture change

  • Your skin type

  • Your medical and treatment history

  • How much downtime you're comfortable with

  • What you've already tried

  • The result you're hoping to achieve

Your plan may include microneedling alone or a combination of treatments over time.

Options may include:

  • SkinPen microneedling

  • Secret RF

  • Laser Genesis

  • IPL

  • Pearl or Pearl Fractional resurfacing

  • DiamondGlow

  • Medical-grade skincare

The goal is not more treatment. It's better treatment planning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microneedling

How many microneedling treatments will I need?

It depends on what we're treating. Some clients are focused on general skin maintenance, while acne scars or more noticeable texture changes may require a series. Your recommended treatment plan will be based on your skin and desired level of correction.

Is microneedling painful?

A topical numbing medication is typically used before treatment. Most clients tolerate the procedure well, although sensitivity varies depending on the treatment area and depth.

Can microneedling be done on every skin tone?

SkinPen is FDA-cleared for the treatment of facial acne scars in adults across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Your individual skin condition and treatment history still need to be evaluated before treatment.

How long will my skin be red?

Redness and sensitivity are expected after treatment and generally improve as the skin heals. Recovery varies from person to person, so we recommend planning around the possibility of visible redness, dryness, or mild flaking for several days.

Can I wear makeup after microneedling?

Your skin needs time to begin healing after treatment. You'll receive specific aftercare instructions regarding cleansing, skincare, sun protection, and when makeup can safely be resumed.

What's the difference between SkinPen and at-home microneedling?

SkinPen is a professional, prescription-use microneedling device that uses sterile, single-use needle cartridges and allows controlled treatment depths based on the area being treated. Professional treatment is very different from cosmetic rollers or at-home devices.
